ReD Ognita is a Filipino fine-art photographer based in Beijing who works in minimalist black and white. He had a static portfolio site and a blog running on a separate WordPress installation, and asked me to bring them together under one manageable system. I converted the static site into a custom WordPress theme and merged the blog into it.
The brief was to keep the original minimalist design intact, so I took the existing HTML and rewrote it into a theme rather than redesigning it. Two requirements shaped the build: no jQuery lightboxes, and individual photographs kept on their own pages — which I handled using WordPress’s built-in media attachment pages instead of a gallery plugin. I also created a custom post type to group galleries separately from blog posts, keeping photo management straightforward in the admin.
He also wanted to control the site’s favicon and logo himself, so I added a custom theme options page in the admin where he could upload replacement image files. This was before WordPress added logo and favicon controls to the theme customizer. For photographers, a portfolio site has to put the work first and stay out of the way; I build custom WordPress themes that let artists manage their own images without a developer.
